Food For Thought
I'm preparing a food photography class and needed a promotional image for the class. Naturally I wanted to do it inexpensively so I decided a simple shot of some cookies and milk might be a good option.
So, on the way home from the camera store I stopped by the local grocery and grabbed a handful of cookies and some milk. But the milk isn't really milk. Its white school glue which makes an excellent milk substitute. The cookies were most definitely real.
I was planning to shoot the final image with one of my new high resolution cameras but since my trusty old broken down 7D was handy I decided to use it for the test shots. Using an adapter I'd found, I mounted an old Pentax screw mount Zeiss lens to it. I began building my image and each test shot got me a little closer to what would be the final product. The process was going well until suddenly things came crashing down.
You see, the brick wall in the background is much lighter than this image would suggest. I needed it darker so the cookies and milk would grab attention. But light was spilling onto the wall from one of the lights. To solve that problem, I formed a makeshift scrim from an old door and piece of scrap wood.
Just after this test image was captured I attempted to make an adjustment to the scrim. I would quickly regret it. The board fell and in the process took out the stand holding the diffuser for the light, all of which came crashing down onto my set. Cookies went flying. "Milk" went everywhere.
I had no more glue, I had no more cookies and my set was ruined. Not to mention having one very sticky mess to clean up! So, although I wasn't planning for this to be the final promo image but it is.
Once again, my old "worn out" gear comes through. That makes me happy.
